LEGO Icons Botanical Collection 10368 Chrysanthemum - more than another pretty potted plant? [Review]
The LEGO Icons Botanical Collection has continued its tradition of producing detailed and realistic plant models with the introduction of the 10368 Chrysanthemum set. This new addition, comprising 278 pieces, will be available starting August 1st for $29.99 USD. The Chrysanthemum is one of the two new sets in this summer's wave, alongside the plum blossom, both representing two of the four iconic Chinese flowers known as the four gentlemen.
The set arrives in an 18+ branded black box, featuring the finished chrysanthemum against an orange backdrop that complements the flower's color scheme. The box design includes a strip of LEGO elements color-matched to the sand-green vase, and the "Botanical Collection" branding is accompanied by four icons, two of which hint at future bamboo-themed sets. The back of the box provides dimensions and an image of a real chrysanthemum for comparison.
Upon unboxing, builders will find three paper parts bags and an instruction booklet. The instruction booklet enhances the building experience with a watercolor-style illustration, photographs of the actual flower, and insights into the set's design process. Notable new or recolored elements include four large curved quarter-circle slopes, essential for forming the underside of the pot.
The construction begins with the vase and its stand, designed to mimic wood with reddish-brown curved horse tail elements serving as feet. The vase itself utilizes a clever technique where curved elements attach to upside-down studs via an inkpot element. A gold band, secured with bricks featuring studs on two sides, accentuates the vase. Large curved quarter-circle slopes are then used to cap the vase, completing its structure. A small central assembly, incorporating three dark green stems, is added to the vase.
Next, the stems are extended using Technic connectors, and two small buds are created using orange cupcake bases. The smaller of the two main blossoms is then assembled, featuring numerous orange claw elements attached to red-orange octagonal parts. The larger blossom is constructed similarly but employs 36 banana elements in three distinct shades of orange, contributing to the flower's rich and varied appearance.
The completed model presents a highly realistic chrysanthemum with vibrant colors contrasting against the darker green stems and leaves, making it an attractive display piece. The set’s height is considered ideal for a LEGO flower, and its vase and stand design closely resemble that of the 10369 Plum Blossom set, allowing for cohesive display when placed together. This set is recommended for enthusiasts of the LEGO Botanical Collection or those who appreciate chrysanthemum flowers, offering a traditional aesthetic through its well-designed vase and wooden base.
