Kohler Moxie Showerhead review: Alexa is a good shower caddy
The Kohler Moxie Showerhead integrates a battery-powered Bluetooth speaker with Amazon Alexa built-in into an otherwise conventional showerhead, aiming to enhance the morning routine with music and voice commands. This smart shower solution allows users to play music, check calendars, control smart home devices, and more directly from their shower. The speaker, which connects magnetically to the showerhead, is portable and can be used in other rooms, functioning as a standalone smart speaker.
Installation of the Kohler Moxie Showerhead is straightforward, requiring only a wrench and the included plumber's tape to attach it to an existing faucet. Setting up the speaker involves creating a Kohler account, linking an Amazon account, and connecting the speaker to Wi-Fi via the Kohler Konnect app. However, the app's troubleshooting support is limited, often directing users to a PDF of instructions rather than providing interactive assistance, and it occasionally struggles with maintaining a connection to the speaker. The device is IPX7 waterproof and available in various finishes and flow rates, with prices ranging from $239 to $259 for Alexa-enabled models and $179 to $199 for Bluetooth-only versions.
The speaker's performance is a notable feature. It boasts impressive sound quality for its size, a result of Kohler's collaboration with Harman Kardon. The audio remains clear and full even at maximum volume, outperforming smaller smart speakers like the Echo Dot and approaching the quality of a full-sized Amazon Echo. The speaker offers two sound modes: "shower" mode, tuned for bathroom acoustics, and "normal" mode, which provides a slightly louder and more omnidirectional sound. However, the app's connectivity issues make it difficult to reliably switch or confirm the active sound mode. The battery provides up to 9 hours of playback and charges via a micro USB-to-USB cable, although the charging cradle's alignment can be finicky.
In contrast, the showerhead component is less remarkable. It provides a single spray setting, described as a balance between a gentle rainfall and an intense massage. This lack of adjustable spray modes is a drawback, as many standard showerheads offer multiple settings. While the default spray is generally adequate, users desiring specific spray patterns might find it limiting.
Despite the showerhead's simplicity and the higher price point compared to buying a separate premium showerhead and smart speaker, the overall quality and portability of the integrated smart speaker make the Kohler Moxie a viable option for those seeking an upgraded shower experience. It offers a more affordable entry into smart showering compared to high-end systems that control water temperature and flow, which can exceed $2,000.
