Green and serene kitchens

The article explores the growing trend of incorporating green, earthy tones into kitchen design, highlighting how these shades act as new neutrals to create serene and sophisticated spaces. It presents three case studies of homeowners in the Bethesda area who have successfully integrated green into their kitchen remodels, offering insights into their design choices and motivations. The first case study features Tyler Jeffrey and Adam Tarosky's kitchen in their 60-year-old brick colonial in Bethesda's Sumner neighborhood. After living in the house since 2019 and undertaking smaller renovations, they decided to tackle the kitchen and butler's pantry in 2022. Their design team, including Nadia Subaran of Aidan Design and Sally Steponkus of Sally Steponkus Interiors, helped them achieve a 'livable luxury' style. Inspired by the natural surroundings, they opted for a soft green called 'Eucalyptus' from Wood-Mode Fine Custom Cabinetry for the kitchen island and butler's pantry cabinets. This green, described as having brown-gray undertones, is noted for its richness and depth, complementing natural elements like wood and stone. Brass-toned accents, in a duller, brushed finish, were chosen for faucets, hardware, and light fixtures, solidifying brass's role as a kitchen staple. The butler's pantry, initially a 'dead zone,' was transformed into a wet bar with a full-size refrigerator and closets, featuring a dramatic geometric wallpaper that adds an edgy, glam touch, reflecting the owners' modern aesthetic. The second example is Meg and John Lazerow's 1936 stone-and-brick home in Bethesda’s Greenwich Forest. When refreshing their home, they engaged interior designer Sara Swabb of Storie Collective, who aimed to preserve the home's original character while adding modern elements and color. The Lazerows chose a warm palette of muted jewel tones, with green cabinets playing a central role. Meg Lazerow noted how green, when integrated with other elements, reads more like a neutral. The kitchen underwent modifications to improve flow and function, including enlarging the main island to 6 by 6½ feet and removing a secondary island. The cabinets were repainted in Farrow & Ball’s 'Treron,' a deep muted green with gray undertones, paired with new brass hardware. Swabb emphasizes green's ability to infuse a sense of calm. An existing breakfast nook was enhanced by eliminating a built-in desk, adding an arch, and painting the walls and ceiling in 'Treron,' creating a comfortable, English-kitchen feel with a touch of drama through plush banquette seating and velvet-covered chairs. An old square opening between the kitchen and family room was replaced with a gracious arch and glass partitions, signaling a transition and adding architectural detail. The final case highlights Meghan Chapple's Silver Spring home, situated in a woodsy lot near Sligo Creek. Chapple, working in environmental sustainability, desired a strong connection to the outdoors within her home. She envisioned her kitchen as a central gathering place and chose green cabinets to bring the outside in. Contractor Geoff Rackstraw removed the wall between the formal dining room and kitchen to create a combined, open space with views of the backyard. Designer Colleen Quinn of RedBird ReDesign selected 'Parlor Green' from Crystal Cabinet Works for the cabinets, a rich yet not overwhelming shade. This was balanced with a stained alderwood center island topped with quartz resembling concrete. To compensate for the lack of wall cabinets, a storage pantry was created from the living room space, and a freestanding glass-front china cabinet was added, cleverly concealing a support post. Textural elements like 4-inch square white zellige-style tiles for the backsplash and a plaster-finished exhaust hood were used to achieve an organic feel. The design successfully created a serene retreat that reflects Chapple's appreciation for nature. #KitchenDesign #GreenInteriors #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesignTrends #BethesdaHomes #NaturalPalette #Cabinetry #HomeDecor #KitchenDesign #GreenInteriors #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesignTrends #BethesdaHomes #NaturalPalette #Cabinetry #HomeDecor
