Enveloping lounge chairs and lightweight office chairs from Arper feature on Dezeen Showroom
Italian brand Arper showcases a diverse collection of contemporary lounge and office chairs on Dezeen Showroom, emphasizing sustainable design principles and collaborations with renowned design studios. This collection features several distinct chair models, each designed with specific functionalities and aesthetic considerations, while consistently adhering to environmentally conscious manufacturing and end-of-life considerations.
One prominent offering is the Kata chair, a collaboration with Barcelona design studio Altherr Désile Park. This solid wood lounge chair draws inspiration from traditional artisanal woven straw chairs and incorporates circular economy principles. Its design prioritizes minimizing environmental impact throughout its lifecycle, from production and distribution to the sourcing of materials. The frame of the Kata chair is crafted from FSC-certified oak and black locust wood, finished with a water-based varnish. The upholstery, which forms both the seat and backrest, is a 3D-knitted cover made from recycled polyester sourced from post-consumer plastic waste, equivalent to one kilogram of PET bottles. A key feature of the Kata chair is its complete disassemblability, allowing for easy recycling at the end of its functional life.
Another innovative product is the Mixu chair, developed in partnership with global architecture firm Gensler. This chair also adopts a sustainable approach, aiming to provide designers with creative flexibility and a human-centric touch. Constructed from FSC-certified wood and post-industrial recycled plastic, the Mixu chair is composed of three easily separable elements: a seat, backrest, and base. These components are held together without glues or staples, facilitating straightforward dismantling, recycling, or responsible disposal. This design also allows for individual component replacement, extending the chair's lifespan. To further reduce its carbon footprint, the Mixu chair is shipped disassembled, optimizing volume and minimizing transportation impact.
The Kinesit Met office chair, originally launched in 2014 by Lievore Altherr Molina, receives a contemporary update with new textures and materials. This lightweight office chair is now available in an expanded palette of warm, cool, and neutral tones, enabling mix-and-match customization for the seat and backrest. Its minimalist and elegant profile makes it suitable for various work environments, including home offices. The Kinesit Met features adjustable lumbar support discreetly integrated into its thin backrest, and is offered in low or medium-back configurations. The base and armrests are made from aluminum, with finish options including copper, light grey, or anthracite.
French designer Jean-Marie Massaud has expanded his Aston seating range with new club chair models. While retaining the original shape from 2006, these updated variations are designed for lounge settings, offering a more relaxed feel compared to their boardroom predecessors. The Aston Club features a deep, inclined seat, ample space, and a wraparound headrest for enhanced comfort and privacy, with an optional footrest. The Aston Club Low Back provides similar comfort in a more compact form without a headrest. Both models come with four-star bases, available in painted aluminum, no-VOC paint, or polished finishes. Consistent with Arper's commitment to sustainability, the internal frame of the Aston chairs is made from post-industrial recycled waste and is designed for easy disassembly and recycling.
Arper has also reissued Bardi's Bowl Chair, an iconic design from 1951 by modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi, as a tribute to her posthumous Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. This re-release is a collaboration with Venetian textile company Rubelli, featuring two distinct fabrics. The Lollipop fabric mirrors typical 1950s prints with geometric patterns of red and mustard yellow brushstrokes, while the Eureka fabric offers a similar color palette but with a woven textured design. Arper, established in 1989 by Luigi Feltrin and his sons Claudio and Mauro, is a family-run Italian company producing furniture for communities, workplaces, and homes, including chairs, stools, sofas, benches, tables, accessories, and acoustic panels. The brand frequently partners with leading architects, designers, and material suppliers like Kvadrat and Camira.
