7 ways to style a perfectly imperfect mantlepiece

The article explores various approaches to styling a mantlepiece, transforming it into a decorative focal point within a home, even if the fireplace is no longer functional. It presents several examples, showcasing diverse styles and arrangements that achieve an 'imperfectly perfect' aesthetic. The first example features an artist's home where a lithograph by Georges Braque is displayed above the fireplace. The mantelshelf is adorned with a collection of mementos and various objects, including unique ceramic candlesticks purchased in Marrakech in the 1970s. The arrangement is accented by brown and electric blue candles, introducing a deliberate splash of color. Another illustration highlights the fireplace in Pentreath & Hall, a shop co-owned by designer Ben Pentreath. This mantlepiece is distinguished by Peter Hone medallions depicting historical figures, which edge the fireplace. The shelf itself is curated with antique glassware, candlesticks, and ginger jars, while a series of architectural prints are hung above. The surrounding walls are painted in a pumpkin orange shade, specifically 'The Long Room' by Paint & Paper Library. In the living room of designer Max Rollitt's Hampshire home, a cozy taupe-brown paint sets the backdrop for the mantlepiece. Here, red candles housed in antique holders introduce a vibrant pop of color, contributing to the room's inviting atmosphere. Nicky Haslam's mantlepiece is characterized by a personal collection, described as 'a motley crew of my favourite people.' This display is combined with four small crystal vases, each holding a single budding flower. Novelty egg timers shaped like cupcakes are also part of the arrangement. When lit, candles in 19th-century French candlesticks illuminate a painting positioned behind a flying figure of St Joseph, creating a dramatic effect. Stylist Alexander Breeze's Brixton flat features an imposing picture above the original fireplace, acquired at auction. Described as 'by a follower of Théodore Géricault,' it is affectionately referred to as 'the Géricault.' The mantlepiece itself holds an assortment of eclectic items and photographs of friends and family. A bronze sculpture of Hercules, a high-quality Chinese copy of a 17th-century original, was notably acquired on eBay. In a London house, the mantlepiece is decorated with turquoise sea horses, which were sourced from Les Couilles du Chien on Golborne Road, adding a distinctive marine-inspired touch to the decor. The article also presents a 'more is more' approach at Faringdon House, where the fireplace achieves a visual richness through a balanced blend of symmetry and asymmetry. This style is created by first establishing a vertical line of objects and then arranging horizontal elements around them. The final impact is achieved through the artful and intentional mismatch of various objects on the mantlepiece, creating a visually engaging display. Finally, Charlie Porter from the magazine's decoration team showcases a mantlepiece styled with printable art by Luke Edward Hall, demonstrating how curated art can enhance a mantelpiece's decorative appeal. #MantlepieceStyling #HomeDecoration #InteriorDesign #FireplaceDecor #EclecticDecor #PersonalizedHome #DecorativeFocalPoint #AntiqueDecor #ArtfulArrangement #MantlepieceStyling #HomeDecoration #InteriorDesign #FireplaceDecor #EclecticDecor #PersonalizedHome #DecorativeFocalPoint #AntiqueDecor #ArtfulArrangement
