7 ways to keep your Mother's Day flowers fresh and long lasting — expert tips

Mother's Day often involves gifting bouquets of flowers, which, while beautiful, can quickly wilt without proper care. This article provides seven expert tips to significantly extend the lifespan of cut flowers, focusing on preventing bacterial growth, which is a primary cause of their decline. Adhering to these guidelines can help maintain the freshness and vibrancy of Mother's Day flowers for an extended period. The initial recommendation involves selecting flower varieties known for their natural longevity. Julian de Bosdari, CEO of Ashridge plant nursery, suggests opting for chrysanthemums, carnations, and orchids, which can last for several weeks. In contrast, more delicate flowers like tulips and peonies typically have a vase life of only about five days. This proactive selection can greatly influence how long a bouquet remains fresh. Secondly, the choice and cleanliness of the vase are crucial. A clean vase, preferably made of glass or ceramic, is essential. Vases with wide openings are recommended over those with narrow ones, as they are easier to clean and less prone to trapping bacteria. Plastic vases should be avoided due to their porous nature, which can harbor bacteria and accelerate wilting. Maintaining a clean container is fundamental to preventing microbial contamination of the water. Thirdly, proper stem trimming is vital for water absorption. Although stems are pre-cut, it is important to re-trim about half an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle using a clean knife or sharp scissors. This diagonal cut maximizes the surface area for water intake, ensuring the flowers remain hydrated. Regular re-trimming every couple of days is also advised to maintain optimal water absorption. Fourth, any foliage below the waterline must be removed. Leaves and petals submerged in water decompose, fostering bacterial growth. These bacteria can clog the stems, impeding water uptake and shortening the flowers' lifespan. Removing submerged foliage helps keep the water clean and the stems clear, promoting better hydration and overall longevity. Fifth, the placement of the bouquet significantly impacts its freshness. Flowers should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources, as these accelerate wilting and premature blooming. A cooler environment with indirect light is ideal. Additionally, flowers should not be placed near ripening fruits like bananas and apples. These fruits release ethylene gas, which hastens the aging process and causes petals to drop more quickly. Sixth, regular water changes are indispensable. The water in the vase should be changed every two days, or even daily for more delicate varieties. Cloudy water or water containing debris indicates a need for immediate replacement. Fresh, clean water prevents the buildup of bacteria that can compromise the health of the flowers. Finally, nourishing the flowers with food is beneficial. Most bouquets come with a sachet of liquid flower food, which should be added to the water initially. For prolonged freshness, additional flower food should be added with each water change. A homemade alternative can be created using two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of white vinegar per liter of lukewarm water. Sugar provides essential nutrients, while vinegar lowers the water's pH, improving water absorption and inhibiting bacterial growth due to its antimicrobial properties. These comprehensive steps collectively ensure Mother's Day flowers remain beautiful and vibrant for as long as possible. #MothersDay #FlowerCare #BouquetLongevity #HomeDecor #GardeningTips #FlowerArrangement #PlantCare #MothersDay #FlowerCare #BouquetLongevity #HomeDecor #GardeningTips #FlowerArrangement #PlantCare
