10 Women-Owned Businesses in the Construction Industry

The construction industry, traditionally male-dominated, is experiencing a significant shift with a growing presence of women in ownership and leadership roles. To highlight this change, especially during Women's History Month and International Women's Day, this article spotlights ten exemplary women who are leading successful construction and contracting businesses. According to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), women constitute about 10% of the overall industry, with women-owned construction and contracting firms seeing a substantial 64% increase between 2014 and 2019, now accounting for approximately 13% of all construction-related companies. This growth is further supported by the rising number of women entering STEM fields and the networking and support offered by various women in construction associations. Robin Thorne, a multiple award-winning businesswoman and chemical engineer, founded and leads CTI Environmental in California. Her company specializes in hazardous materials assessments and construction management. Thorne, an African-American entrepreneur, has transformed CTI Environmental into a multi-million-dollar enterprise. She also established Demo Chicks, a non-profit dedicated to empowering young Black women to pursue careers in construction, engineering, and demolition. Jean Bjork is the president and owner of Bjork Construction, a general contracting firm in Fremont, California, which she co-founded in 1988. Under her leadership, the company expanded from residential to commercial contracting. Bjork is recognized for mentoring new generations of women in the industry and has been honored as one of Construction Business Owner Magazine’s Outstanding Women in Construction for 2020. Her company is listed among the Top 100 Women-Owned Businesses in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Business Times, and she received the National Women’s Business Enterprise Star Award. Angela Cacace founded A. Marie Design Build, a custom design and remodeling firm in North Carolina, after her kitchen remodel gained national recognition. She also created "Move Over Bob," an initiative that evolved from a hashtag into a professional organization providing support and networking for women in construction. Peggy Hogan Marker, president and co-founder of Marker Construction Group, brings over 30 years of experience to the construction industry. She manages business development, marketing, and community development for the Florida-based group and co-owns her family’s real estate development companies. Marker was named one of Construction Business Owner's "20 Female Leaders in Construction You Need to Know." Rachel Street, founder of The Street Group and Hestia Construction, LLC, is an expert in real estate, renovation, and design in Philadelphia. After a career change from opera singing due to health issues, she began renovating houses and documented her work on Instagram, which led to her hosting DIY Network's "Philly Revival" and HGTV's "Philly Street Flippin'." Her firms are noted for their community service, including mentoring at-risk youth in skilled trades. Jennifer Todd, founder and president of LMS General Contractors, holds the distinction of being the youngest Black woman to obtain a CSLB (A) General Engineering license in California. Her firm specializes in demolition, disaster recovery, environmental, and site work services with offices in Florida and California. Todd was featured on the cover of Construction Business Owner magazine as an Outstanding Woman in Construction and established "A Greener Tomorrow," a construction training program for unemployed and underemployed individuals of color. Kathryn Cahill Thompson, owner and CEO of Cahill Contractors, represents the fourth generation of her family in construction. With degrees from Dartmouth and Stanford, she joined the family business in 2007 and became CEO in 2016, overseeing a company with over 300 employees and significant annual revenue. She also serves on the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Jane Kaplan Peck, owner and COO of Kaplan Construction since 2014, leads one of Massachusetts' largest women-owned businesses. Her industry leadership has earned her numerous accolades, including recognition as a Woman of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate by Banking New England magazine and an Emerging Leader of the Year by the Associated General Contractors Massachusetts Chapter. Rita Brown, a mother of five, founded Brown Construction Collective (BCC+) in Michigan in 2017 after experiencing hiring reluctance despite her extensive industry experience. Her company focuses on steel detailing and construction consulting. Brown is a strong advocate for diversity and initiated "Project: Accelerate!" to educate women in Detroit about construction opportunities, supported by NAWIC. Marilyn Grabowski, founder and owner of Atlantic Infra, leads the world's largest and most experienced infrared contractor based in New Jersey. Since its inception in 2002, her company has expanded into large-scale milling and paving services through Atlantic InfraStructure. Grabowski is an active mentor for women entering the construction field. These women exemplify innovation, leadership, and a commitment to fostering a more inclusive and diverse construction industry. #WomenInConstruction #WomenOwnedBusiness #ConstructionIndustry #FemaleLeaders #Entrepreneurship #DiversityInConstruction #STEMCareers #Mentorship #BusinessDevelopment #WomenInConstruction #WomenOwnedBusiness #ConstructionIndustry #FemaleLeaders #Entrepreneurship #DiversityInConstruction #STEMCareers #Mentorship #BusinessDevelopment
