With Fine & Dandy Co.'s New Wallpaper Collection, A Romantic Daydream Awaits
Fine & Dandy Co., in collaboration with NYC-based artist Hazel Lee Santino, has launched a new wallpaper collection titled 'Fantasticheria,' a name that translates to 'to get lost in daydreams.' This collection aims to bring a sense of romantic and antique home aesthetics to any room, regardless of its age. The designers recognize that people with an affinity for such aesthetics often value character elements like original pre-war moldings, fireplaces, and aged furniture. The 'Fantasticheria' collection provides a way to introduce this character through wallpaper.
The collection is characterized by whimsical neoclassical motifs, incorporating decorative mythological elements reminiscent of Ancient Rome. Shelley Weinreb, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Fine & Dandy Co., explains that the structured and balanced aesthetic of neoclassical design serves as a perfect contrast to the untamed, organic shapes found in nature, especially when hand-rendered. This interplay creates a harmonious and accentuating visual effect. Examples within the collection include the 'Grotto' wallpaper, which features a woman's face inspired by Roman marble statues, adorned with insect wings, gardenia, fish, and other insect depictions. The 'Facade' wallpaper is designed to mimic the worn-down appearance of ancient Roman architecture, adding a visual layer of history and depth to the spaces where it is applied, with similar effects extended to the borders.
While drawing heavily from neoclassical styles, the wallpapers are designed to be easily integrated into contemporary settings. Carla Morano, Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Fine & Dandy Co., notes that infusing the formality of neoclassical design with wilder, less traditional elements has resulted in a fantastical collection that feels simultaneously ancient and modern. A significant innovation in this collection is the introduction of a new plaster-type substrate called Fresco. This material is crucial in enhancing the hand-painted design elements and simulating the look and texture of plaster or stucco, which further contributes to an age-worn realism. This attention to detail addresses a common challenge with wallpapers of this style: ensuring they do not appear artificial or cheap. The use of texture-rich Fresco helps to avoid a digitalized or improperly printed look, allowing the wallpapers to genuinely convey the desired antique and romantic feel, akin to bringing a piece of an Italian Villa into one's home.
