We Tried Dozens of Cooling Sheets—These Kept Us Cool and Comfortable

This comprehensive guide identifies the best cooling bed sheets for hot sleepers and individuals experiencing night sweats, based on extensive testing of over 200 sheet sets. The article emphasizes that many "cooling sheets" on the market do not live up to their claims, necessitating a thorough evaluation process to identify truly effective options. The testing methodology involved both laboratory assessments and long-term at-home use, covering various materials like bamboo, eucalyptus, linen, and cotton. The top recommendation is the Linenwalas Tencel Lyocell Bed Sheets, praised for their silky-soft texture, immediate cooling sensation, and moisture-wicking properties. These sheets maintained their coolness throughout the night and demonstrated excellent durability and quality even after six months of use. They are made from 100% Tencel lyocell, boast a 300 thread count, and are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, fitting mattresses up to 16 inches deep. Despite minor initial loose threads, their overall performance and reasonable price positioned them as the best overall choice. For budget-conscious shoppers, the Comfort Spaces Coolmax Moisture Wicking Sheet Set is highlighted as a high-performing option despite its low price point. Made from a blend of polyester and CoolMax microfiber, these sheets excel at moisture management, quickly dispersing water. They are cool to the touch and durable, with stains easily removable. While synthetic materials may not offer the longevity of natural fibers, their effectiveness and affordability make them a strong contender. The Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set is recognized as the best bamboo option, offering a unique combination of coziness and cooling. Made from viscose derived from bamboo, these sheets effectively draw heat away from the body, providing comfortable sleep in both warm and cool conditions. They feature deep 20-inch pockets, ensuring a secure fit on thick mattresses, and soften with each wash. Although expensive, their durability justifies the investment. The Citizenry Organic Stonewashed Percale Sheet Set is recommended for its crisp, airy feel and ability to keep sleepers cool without overheating, even in hot climates. These percale sheets, made from 100% organic cotton, offer a luxurious feel that balances crispness with softness. They maintain color vibrancy after multiple washes and resist wrinkling better than some other materials, fitting mattresses up to 15 inches deep. The set is Oeko-Tex and Global Organic Textile Standard certified. For linen enthusiasts, the Pottery Barn Belgian Flax Linen Sheet Set stands out for its exceptional cooling properties and durability. These sheets regulate body temperature effectively, providing comfort year-round. They have proven resilient against wear and tear, including use with pets, and their initial roughness softens significantly with washing. Made from 100% Belgian flax linen and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, they fit mattresses up to 16 inches deep. Finally, the THXSILK Luxury Mulberry Silk Bed Sheets Set is chosen as the best silk option. These sheets, made from a blend of mulberry silk and modal, are gentle on skin and hair, reducing friction and preventing bedhead. They effectively reduce sweat during warm nights and offer a luxurious feel without an exorbitant price. While they may have some excess fabric on pillowcases and fitted sheets, their benefits for both comfort and aesthetic well-being are notable. The article concludes by offering practical advice on shopping for cooling sheets, emphasizing material choice (cotton percale, linen, bamboo-derived fabrics, and Tencel lyocell), pocket depth to ensure proper fit, and the nuanced role of thread count, advising against excessively high counts for cooling properties. It also differentiates between "cooling" and "breathable" sheets, explains materials hot sleepers should generally avoid (dense synthetic blends), and suggests additional strategies for staying cool at night, such as using cooling blankets, mattress toppers, and fans.
