The Best Projectors for 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter

Choosing the right projector involves considering its intended use, the room type, and the desired screen size, as projectors vary significantly in price and performance. For a dedicated, high-performance home theater, the Epson Home Cinema LS11000 is an excellent 4K laser projector under $5,000, offering rich, accurate images, sufficient brightness for HDR, and accurate colors in natural picture mode. Its laser light source ensures long-term use, and it features high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs, making it compatible with advanced 4K gaming consoles and future 8K sources. Its motorized lens with generous zoom and lens-shifting capabilities simplifies setup, although it lacks 3D video playback. For a more casual living or family room, the Hisense C2 Ultra is recommended as an all-in-one 4K projector. While its dynamic image contrast and color accuracy don't match the LS11000, its high brightness and robust features, including a vibrant and sharp picture with 10-step brightness control, a long-lasting laser light source, built-in streaming (Vidaa platform), a speaker system, and support for AirPlay, Bluetooth, and 3D video, make it suitable. It is also excellent for gaming, with low input lag and 1440p resolution at 120 Hz, but its color accuracy is less precise, and its HDMI inputs are not full-bandwidth 2.1. Its design, with a shorter throw ratio and integrated stand, is not ideal for dedicated theater rooms. For budget-conscious home theater setups, the BenQ HT2060 is a top pick under $1,500, providing great brightness, contrast, and color accuracy for a dedicated space. It offers impressive out-of-the-box accuracy and excels in reproducing dark film scenes, despite producing some digital noise in mid to dark grays. It lacks Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and built-in streaming apps, but these can be added with a media streamer. As a DLP projector, some users might notice the "rainbow effect." Alternatively, the Hisense M2 Pro is an all-in-one 4K projector under $1,500 for casual living room use, featuring good brightness, contrast, a sharp 4K picture, a wider color gamut from its laser light source, and easy setup. It includes a dynamic speaker system, integrated tiltable stand, and the Vidaa streaming platform. It's also gaming-friendly with low input lag and 1440p at 120 Hz, but its color accuracy and dark-scene performance are not as good as the BenQ HT2060, and its HDMI inputs are not full-bandwidth 2.1. Its integrated stand and digital lens adjustments make it better suited for casual settings, and it can also exhibit the "rainbow effect." For portability, the Nebula Mars 3 Air is a compact 1080p LED projector with good brightness and contrast, rich color, and above-average sound from its internal speakers. It includes a built-in battery, Google TV for streaming, automatic focus and image shaping, and Bluetooth audio support. However, its shallow tripod socket and ridged underside can make mounting difficult, and it lacks a USB-C port. Its black level, brightness, and color accuracy are not comparable to traditional home theater projectors. For small spaces, the BenQ X500i is a 4K short-throw projector that can cast a large image from a short distance (e.g., a 100-inch image from 5 feet). It offers excellent contrast, color, and detail, making it suitable for all content types, especially gaming, with specific picture modes, higher refresh rates, and lower input lag. Its lens adjustments are limited to 1.2x zoom and no lens shifting, and it lacks a powered USB-A port. For outdoor use, the Nebula Mars 3 is a rugged and portable 1080p projector with good brightness and long battery life, featuring an IPX3 weatherproof rating, drop resistance, and an LED lantern. It provides solid image contrast and color accuracy, supports 3D playback and MEMC motion smoothing, and has a powerful built-in sound system. It is bulkier than preferred, and lacks USB video ports, requiring an HDMI adapter cable. Ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors are generally not recommended as TV replacements due to their cost and performance limitations compared to large TVs or traditional projectors. To complete a projector setup, a proper screen is essential for accurate colors and image quality. The Silver Ticket STR Series (fixed-frame) and Elite Screens Manual Series (pull-down) are recommended for indoor use, while the Elite Screens Yard Master Plus and Yard Master 2 are top choices for outdoor viewing, offering ISF-certified material for preserving image brightness and color accuracy. A reliable projector mount, such as the Peerless-AV PRGS-UNV, is also crucial for stable and adjustable installation. Additional AV gear, including speakers and media sources, is necessary for a complete home theater system.
