The 26 Best Outdoor Rugs of 2025 Our Editors Love

Outdoor rugs can significantly enhance the style and comfort of patios, porches, and decks, transforming outdoor living spaces into cozy extensions of a home. When selecting an outdoor rug, several factors beyond aesthetics must be considered, including material, size, placement, and maintenance requirements. Heather Goerzen, managing editor for Havenly, emphasizes the importance of material durability, especially for areas with high foot traffic, frequent spills, and potential paw prints, recommending materials like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyester due to their resilience to sun and rain, ease of cleaning, and soft, flat-woven appearance. For covered patios, natural fibers like sisal or jute are suggested for their organic texture. The article categorizes outdoor rugs into floral, solid, geometric, and organic designs, providing detailed reviews for several top picks within each category. For example, the Ruggable Outdoor Camellia Multicolor Rug is highlighted for its vibrant floral design, machine washability, fade resistance, and made-to-order options, despite its customer service being limited to text or email. The At Home Beige Flower Plastic Outdoor Area Rug is praised for its affordability and lightweight plastic material, making it easy to clean and move, though it is only available in two larger sizes. The Mad Mats Turkish Aqua Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug, made from recycled plastic, offers durability, breathability, and quick drying, preventing water stains on wooden surfaces, although its appearance can be more plastic-like and brighter in person than online. In the solid outdoor rugs category, the Outer 1188 Eco-Friendly Outdoor Rug, crafted from recycled PET plastic, stands out for its natural stain and fade resistance and versatile design, despite its higher price point. The Entryways Miracle-Gro Knot Doormat combines functionality and aesthetics with its natural coconut fiber construction, short pile, and knotted design that effectively traps dirt, although it may shed. The Rugs.com Solid Indoor/Outdoor Rug is noted for its extensive size and color options, flat-weave, stain-resistant material, and suitability for pet owners, though it may require effort to flatten initially. Geometric outdoor rugs include the Lulu and Georgia Ember Indoor/Outdoor Rug, recognized for its durable polypropylene material and versatility for both indoor and outdoor use, though shedding can be an issue. The Easy-Going Reversible Outdoor Rug is lauded for its lightweight design, portability, and ease of cleaning, being UV-resistant and waterproof, but its plastic composition may not be the softest underfoot. The FH Home Flat Woven Outdoor Rug, made of sturdy polypropylene, is waterproof, quick-drying, and resistant to mold and mildew, offering a wide array of colors and styles, though a rug pad is recommended to prevent slipping. Organic outdoor rugs, such as the Annie Selke Bowline Tangerine Handwoven Indoor/Outdoor Round Rug, provide a bold, colorful design with a latex backing for anti-slip properties, though colors might slightly differ from online images. The Ruggable Outdoor Tulum Desert Sage Rug offers easy maintenance with its machine washable and lightweight design, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, despite potential issues with wind lifting. Mark Cutler, cofounder of CutlerSchulze, advises selecting rugs with multiple colors and high degrees of pattern to better conceal dirt, wear, and fading. He also suggests loop pile rugs for high-traffic areas due to their strength and wearability. Regarding seasonal care, Cutler recommends storing rugs in a dry place after professional cleaning at the end of the season in colder or wetter climates to prevent mold and mildew, while in warmer climates, rugs might be left out year-round, albeit with expected fading. The use of a rug pad is generally advised to protect the underlying surface, prevent movement, and allow the rug to breathe, aiding in dryness and hindering odors and stains.
