I Just Found 8 Airbnbs That Look Straight Out of ‘The Holiday’ (All Within Driving Distance of NYC)

The article explores how the popular film ‘The Holiday’ serves as a significant source of home design inspiration, influencing searches for 'English cottage rentals' and 'California modern kitchens.' It highlights the distinct yet equally appealing aesthetics of the two main houses in the movie: Iris’s cozy Surrey cottage, characterized by low ceilings, embroidered pillows, and a perpetually steaming kettle, and Amanda’s sleek Los Angeles estate, featuring sun-drenched modern spaces ideal for entertaining. Both properties are presented as embodying the 'Nancy Meyers feeling,' where the home itself acts as a central character in the story. Recognizing that most individuals cannot realistically swap houses across continents, the author has curated a list of eight Airbnbs located within a driving distance of New York City that capture the essence of ‘The Holiday’s’ set design. These selected properties cater to two distinct preferences: the cozy, rustic charm of Iris’s cottage (featuring fireplaces, exposed beams, and quilts) or the sleek, modern appeal of Amanda’s California dream home (with glass walls, statement kitchens, and infinity pools). The first Airbnb, 'Stone Cottage Farm' in Bloomville, NY, blends Iris’s secluded countryside romance with Amanda’s polished aesthetic. It offers a 250-acre property with private stables, a hot tub, and a large fieldstone fireplace in the living room. The interiors feature crisp white walls and layered neutrals, while the kitchen combines farmhouse elements with modern stainless steel appliances. 'Europe in the Catskills' in East Jewett, NY, mirrors Amanda’s San Marino estate with its minimalist lines, grand scale, and Scandinavian-inspired design, including a 30-foot glass curtain wall with mountain views and a spa-like bathroom. The kitchen is high-end yet incorporates wood cabinetry for rustic restraint. 'Barn and Bike Cottage' in Red Hook, NY, combines Iris’s rustic barn elements—shiplap walls, exposed beams, and a wood-burning hearth—with a modern, airy feel due to its window-pane walls and a mid-century suspended fireplace. It also includes modern amenities like a game room and an EV charger. 'Whimsy Woods Estate' in Millbrook, NY, offers a sharp, restrained palette of white walls and black-framed windows, mimicking Amanda’s gallery-like backdrop. It features a dark slab kitchen with an oversized stone island and an outdoor saline pool, maintaining a glamorous, self-contained vibe. 'Birch Bunny Treehouse' in Winhall, VT, strikes a balance between Iris’s snug cottage and Amanda’s polished estate. It boasts salvaged barn frames, timber beams, and a chef’s kitchen, alongside a home theater loft, hot tub, and sauna. 'Stylish Rural Sanctuary' in East Chatham, NY, is envisioned as a modern Nancy Meyers set for 2025, blending Iris’s English coziness with Amanda’s contemporary touches, such as a Devol-fitted chef’s kitchen and a cinematic pool. 'Green Mountain Chalet' in Wilmington, VT, scales up Iris’s cottage for a larger family, offering a stone fireplace, exposed beams, a chef’s kitchen, and a game room, all situated on five private acres. Finally, the 'Vanderbilt Carriage House' in Hyde Park, NY, although historic externally, transforms into Amanda’s LA property internally with its loft-like scale, minimalist design, 36-foot glass wall, and a sleek Scavolini kitchen. It features collectible modern furniture and an infinity pool, offering a cinematic California lifestyle with Hudson River views. The article implicitly suggests that these Airbnbs provide opportunities for a temporary escape that embodies the desired aesthetic from the film, whether one prefers rustic comfort or modern luxury.
