7 Rental-Friendly Lighting Hacks Designers Use to Instantly Brighten Up Their Spaces

Living in a rental property often presents challenges when it comes to customizing and improving the living space, particularly regarding lighting. Many renters face dimly lit environments due to inadequate fixed lighting, and the fear of losing a security deposit or incurring landlord charges often prevents them from installing hardwired luminaires. This article offers practical and insightful lighting hacks from interior designers Julie Khuu and Kristen McGowan, focusing on non-permanent solutions that can significantly brighten a rental property without requiring extensive modifications. One of the primary recommendations involves the use of plug-in pendant lights. These fixtures offer a stylish way to illuminate areas like kitchen counters or dining tables, requiring only a simple ceiling hook for installation. To address the aesthetic concern of exposed cords, designers suggest using fabric or paintable plastic cord covers, which can blend seamlessly with the wall color. However, renters are advised to seek landlord permission before drilling any holes, despite the ease of patching them up. Battery-operated wall sconces are another highly favored hack. These non-hardwired options are praised for their ability to instantly elevate a space by adding dimension and functionality. They are versatile, suitable for various applications, including dark hallways, staircases, and flanking beds or sofas. The innovative aspect of this hack is the suggestion to choose any desired wall sconce, even a hardwired one, and convert it by tucking away or snipping the wires and using battery-powered bulbs. Mounting can be done with screws (again, with landlord approval) or strong double-stick tape. Employing sconces in pairs to frame a focal point like artwork or a mirror is recommended to introduce symmetry and a custom feel to the room. For areas requiring brighter, more functional lighting, plug-in sconces are suggested. These fixtures accommodate standard electric bulbs, providing full brightness. Cord management is crucial here, with slim, paintable cord covers helping to integrate the wiring discreetly into the wall. This solution minimizes the effort needed for repair or repainting upon moving out. Battery-operated picture lights offer an ambient lighting solution. These lightweight fixtures can be easily attached above art pieces, kitchen windows, bookcases, or mirrors using strong double-sided tape. They come in various finishes and widths, allowing for stylistic integration into any decor. Removal is simple, often requiring a product like Goo-Gone to clean up any adhesive residue. Under-cabinet lighting, including plug-in and flexible strip lights, provides effective ambient illumination. These can be installed in kitchens (under upper cabinets or along toe-kicks), in hallways, or behind entertainment systems. The flexibility of strip lights allows them to be adapted for corners and curves, with many rechargeable options available on platforms like Amazon. The concept of layered lighting is emphasized as a key design principle. Designers recommend incorporating at least three light sources in every space to achieve a bright, cozy, and balanced ambiance. This layering typically includes overhead lighting, eye-level lighting (such as sconces), and scattered lighting on various surfaces (like table lamps or accent lights). Finally, passive strategies also contribute to a brighter space. Choosing lampshades in white or light neutral colors helps diffuse the maximum amount of light, creating a warm glow. In contrast, metal or opaque shades are better suited for focused or dramatic lighting. For an overall brighter and more spacious feel, a tone-on-tone color palette with minimal contrast, inspired by zen interiors, is suggested. This includes using soft, muted colors and opting for light textiles like linen upholstery and gauzy sheer window panels instead of heavy drapery, which can make a room appear larger and more open.
