The 3 Best Removable Wallpapers of 2025 | Reviews by Wirecutter

The article reviews and recommends the best peel-and-stick removable wallpapers, designed for easy application and removal without damaging non-textured, painted walls. After 10 weeks of research, sampling, and testing from nine brands, three top picks emerged, each offering distinct characteristics for various preferences. The evaluation criteria included durability, print quality, design variety, and the availability of samples. Durability ensures the wallpaper stays adhered without lifting or wrinkling and removes cleanly, though some paint stripping might occur in extreme conditions. Quality was assessed based on crisp printing and the absence of harmful chemicals like phthalates and VOCs, with a focus on human safety, especially for use in children's bedrooms. Design variety considered companies offering at least 100 patterns and color options, and samples were deemed essential as many companies print on demand with no returns. Wallshoppe Removable Wallpaper is highlighted for its smooth, satin, paper-based material, which proved easiest to apply and readjust for one person due to its thickness and supple feel. This material also helps conceal minor wall imperfections and resists creasing and wrinkling. It boasts over 2,000 patterns, including bold and bright designs with a painterly, collage-like illustration style, and is vinyl-free, avoiding plastic odors. However, text-based patterns might appear blurry, and the company has a no-returns policy, emphasizing the importance of ordering $5 samples. Chasing Paper Wallpaper offers a tactile, woven, fabric-based finish with a matte look and crisp printing. It is lightweight, non-vinyl, and easy to reposition without creasing. While it has fewer designs (around 150), they are well-curated, including small-scale prints. The Greenguard-certified ink provides reassurance against unhealthy VOC concentrations. Its main drawbacks include light colors appearing muted on dark walls and a sticky adhesive that can make it challenging to handle without sticking to itself if the backing is removed too quickly. Livette’s Wallpaper stands out for its excellent print quality and a wide selection of over 300 patterns, ranging from botanicals to abstract shapes, including a kids' section. It is a lightweight, non-vinyl woven material with a subtle silk-like texture and a flat matte appearance. The large sample sizes (19x19 inches) provide a better view of the pattern, and its Greenguard-certified ink and Oeko-Tex certification highlight its health-conscious composition. The adhesive, however, is very strong, making it harder to correct installation mistakes and more prone to peeling paint on older walls, especially in high-temperature environments. It is also the most expensive option per square foot among the top picks. The article further discusses general advice for selecting, ordering, and installing peel-and-stick wallpaper. It recommends choosing patterns based on personal preference and considering pattern density to mask imperfections. For ordering, it advises budgeting for costs ranging from 75 cents to $5 per square foot and always ordering extra material, particularly for patterns that require staggering, as color variations can occur between different print batches. Installation tips include thorough wall preparation, such as confirming paint dryness, removing fixtures, sanding drips, and cleaning walls. Essential tools include a stepping stool, craft knife, straight edge, and a level. The importance of slow, careful application, starting with the first panel as a guide, and getting assistance for easier handling are also emphasized. Finally, the article delves into certifications and green labels, focusing on the health concerns related to phthalates and VOCs in wallpapers. Greenguard certifies inks for low VOC emissions, and Oeko-Tex certifies textiles for harmful chemicals. It notes that third-party certifications like Health Product Declaration or Declare are more reliable than manufacturer claims. The discussion also touches upon the shift away from ortho-phthalates in the vinyl industry due to their potential health impacts, especially on pregnant individuals, children, and infants. The author also mentions other brands that were tested, such as Walls Need Love (good for bold, contemporary patterns), Tempaper (vinyl, widely available, decent choice despite some lifting issues), and Astek Home (affordable, non-PVC, vintage-inspired). Spoonflower was eliminated due to blurry print quality and poor adhesion. Other brands like AllModern, Anthropologie, Magnolia Home, Opalhouse at Target, and Society6 were not tested because they did not offer samples.
